Walk-in baths have been available overseas for nearly 30 years, but are relatively new in Australia.
We have been distributing walk-in baths in Australia for the last 9 years.
Despite our best efforts during this period, we have found that some Occupational Therapists and aid organisations have not yet had the opportunity to assess the value of this type of bath for their clients.
Here are some common misconceptions with this type of bath
Misconception 1: They are NOT a normal bath. Nearly all OTs wisely don’t use normal baths in aged/disability situations.Walk-in baths are a world product that has been specifically designed to avoid all the shortfalls of a normal bath. They are safe for the user to get in and out. They reduce the carers role because the client is safely enclosed, unable to fall. A single carer can look after a number of clients bathing simultaneously.
Misconception 2: They are very expensive to install. These baths are a complete unit. They usually go into an existing shower as a combined bath/shower. No floor modification is needed, they drain into the existing drain hole. No tiling is needed. The plumber accesses the hot and cold pipes in the wall behind the bath and connects them to the supplied fast-fill taps. With the hydrotherapy option, only a waterproof power point is needed behind the bath.
Misconception 3: They use a lot of water. Because the seat is moulded into the bath, they use much less water than a normal bath. The ACCESS model uses about the same amount of water as an 8 minute shower [dependant on the body size of the client].
Misconception 4 : The door seals will leak with time. This was true in the days of rubber seals. All seals in the last 5 to 10 years are medical grade silicon “rubber” with an extremely long life expectancy. The second thing that has made outward doors totally no leak is the use of thick stainless seal door pins which come out of the door edge and go into the door frame. The sockets that the pins go into [in the door frame] are offset by a ¼ “ which squeezes the door onto the seals as the handle is pushed down creating a very tight water seal.
Misconception 5 : Compared to a shower, there is a higher cross infection risk . These baths have no corners or hidden edges that cannot be disinfectant sprayed and rinsed in seconds. The hydrotherapy spa [a real risk area] uses a world leading hydrotherapy air-spa and automatically purges itself between users.
Misconception 6: They need a shower head to wash hair and rinse the bath between users. Because nearly all of our baths go into existing showers, we recommend replacing the existing shower head with a shower head on a braided hose and attaching it to a slider on a vertical grab bar. We have experimented with shower heads on braided hoses built into the bath, but have found them clumsy and unsafe.
Misconception 7: They user will have to wait too long while the bath fills . A valid point if normal taps are used. This is why walk-in baths must come with superfast-fill taps to give a prompt fill-time.

Our baths have been included in many group disability and private homes in Australia by such bodies as Villa Maria, Ability Assist, Nulsen Haven, Valmar Support Services, Department of Communities, Centacare etc. plus they are in many hundreds of private homes around Australia.
By far the most popular models with OTs have been our ‘Access’ and ‘Independent’ models. These have wheelchair friendly access, commercial quality robustness and are compatible with hoists like the Arjo Maxi Movers. Walk-in baths have been fine-tuned over decades and have many unique features needed to make this type of bath practical. This makes for a pleasant user experience for both the client and the carer.
The optional Canadian hydrotherapy air- spa is a true, purpose made, world leading hydrotherapy system , not a pool spa.
The spa also automatically purges itself between users, to minimise the risk of cross-infection.
We are Australia largest vendor of walk-in baths and sell only Australian Standards Compliant products of the highest quality.
These baths are straightforward to install, as they are a complete unit, and can be fitted by any plumber.
